    Keeping Parents Safe at Home

Navigating home care packages, daily routines, carers and support systems without burning out.

"I promised they could stay in their own home."

It's the promise we all make. But as their needs increase, the reality of keeping them safe at home often falls heavily on your shoulders. You might find yourself dropping in every day, managing their medications, doing their shopping, and constantly worrying about falls.

You cannot do this alone indefinitely. It's okay to admit that it's getting hard. Getting help isn't failing them; it's ensuring they get the care they need while you get to go back to just being their daughter.

    Getting the Right Support:

    • My Aged Care & SAS - Single Assessment Process: If you haven't already, register them with My Aged Care and request an assessment. This is the gateway to subsidised help like cleaning, personal care and home modifications.
    • Home Safety Audit: Look at their house with fresh eyes. Remove trip hazards (like loose rugs), install grab rails in the bathroom, and ensure there is adequate lighting at night.
    • Introduce Carers Slowly: Resistance is normal. Start small—maybe a cleaner once a fortnight or someone to help with gardening. Let them get used to having someone else in the house before introducing personal care.

    Managing the Mental Load

The physical tasks are one thing, but the mental load is what really causes burnout. Remembering appointments, coordinating different service providers and constantly anticipating what might go wrong.

Set boundaries early. Decide what you can realistically manage and outsource the rest through their Home Care Package if possible. Remember, your wellbeing is just as important as theirs.
